- Introduction
Rotary paddle level switches are robust electromechanical sensors designed for point level detection in silos, hoppers, and bins containing bulk solids and powders. The device operates via a low-speed motor that rotates a measuring paddle; when the material level rises to reach the paddle, the resulting physical resistance stalls the motor and triggers a microswitch to signal a high, mid, or low level alarm. Conversely, when the material level drops, a tension spring returns the motor to its original position, restarting the rotation and resetting the signal. Their simple, durable construction makes them highly effective for monitoring a wide range of materials, from heavy grains and plastic pellets to fine cement, regardless of the material’s dielectric constant or moisture content.
- Working Principles
The working principle of a rotary paddle level switch relies on a low-speed synchronous motor that continuously rotates a measuring paddle via a drive shaft. When the bulk material reaches the level of the sensor, it obstructs the paddle’s rotation, creating a mechanical torque that causes the motor to shift on its internal mounting. This movement triggers a sensitive microswitch, which stops the motor and sends an electrical signal to indicate a “full” or “blocked” condition. Once the material level recedes and the paddle is free from resistance, a tension spring pulls the motor back to its operating position, restarting the rotation and switching the signal back to indicate an “empty” or “unblocked” state.
- Applications
Rotary paddle level switches are versatile tools for monitoring dry bulk solids across various industrial sectors. Their primary applications include:
Agriculture & Grain Handling
Construction Materials
Food & Beverage
Plastics & Chemicals
Mining & Minerals
Waste & Recycling
Power Generation
