A gas-filled thermometer is a precision temperature-measurement device that operates on the fundamental physical principle that the pressure or volume of a gas increases predictably as it is heated. Typically consisting of a sturdy metal bulb filled with an inert gas (most commonly nitrogen), the bulb is connected via a fine capillary tube to a pressure-sensing element like a Bourdon tube. As the temperature at the bulb rises, the gas exerts greater pressure, causing the Bourdon tube to unwind and move a pointer across a calibrated scale. These thermometers are highly valued in industrial settings for their durability, wide operating range (often from -200°C to 800°C), and their ability to provide accurate readings from a distance without the use of electrical power.

The working principle of a gas-filled thermometer is rooted in Gay-Lussac’s Law, which states that the pressure of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature when the volume is kept constant. In a practical setup, a bulb filled with an inert gas (like nitrogen) is exposed to the heat source; as the gas molecules gain kinetic energy, they collide more frequently with the walls of the bulb, creating an increase in internal pressure. This pressure is transmitted through a narrow capillary tube to a Bourdon tube—a curved, flexible metal coil—which begins to straighten as the pressure rises. This mechanical movement is then translated through a linkage system to a pointer on a dial, providing a linear and highly reliable temperature reading.
