- Introduction
Capacitance level instruments operate on the principle of a basic electrical capacitor, where the sensor probe and the vessel wall (or a reference electrode) act as two conductive plates separated by a dielectric medium. As the level of the process material rises and falls within the tank, it displaces the air or vapor space, changing the overall dielectric constant between the electrodes and causing a proportional shift in the measured capacitance. This change is then converted by the integrated electronics into a continuous level signal or a point-level switch output. Because they have no moving parts and can withstand high temperatures and pressures, these instruments are highly versatile for measuring both liquids and solids, provided the material has a consistent dielectric property.
- Working Principles
Capacitance level instruments function based on the electrical principle of a capacitor, where the sensor probe and the vessel wall (or a ground reference) serve as two conductive plates separated by a dielectric medium. The total capacitance of the system changes as the process material rises and falls within the container, displacing the air or gas space with a material that has a different dielectric property. This shift in capacitance is directly proportional to the level of the material, which the device’s electronics then convert into a standard electrical signal for continuous monitoring or point-level detection. These sensors are particularly valued for their durability and lack of moving parts, making them suitable for a wide range of industrial applications involving liquids, slurps, and granular solids.
